Obviously, the first choice was to not destroy it at all. Second choice would be to destroy as little as possible safely. Last choice was to destroy the whole thing. I guess Mr. Silentbacchus would have preferred the township allow the continuing pollution of the ground and ground water so as not to disturb the 18th century house. Although I believe in historic preservation, I believe in safety for those still living comes first. If that does not make me "pure" enough of a preservationist for you, I am sorry.Jules Mermelsteinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04439065768389724277noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9061970718649739671.post-79615629817832358932009-02-17T21:54:00.000-05:002009-02-17T21:54:00.000-05:00"and we are into historic preservation" what a lud..."and we are into historic preservation" what a ludicrous statement from an academic. What a shame. It seems odd that a gas/oil tank would be located DIRECTLY under an eighteenth century building. Could a portion of the house been taken apart to get it out?silentbacchushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08324746532277401210noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9061970718649739671.post-6223688099589324612009-02-16T08:32:00.000-05:002009-02-16T08:32:00.000-05:00The reason the house had to be demolished, and qui...The reason the house had to be demolished, and quickly, was that there was no other way to reach the underground tank (that nobody at Temple knew was there) that was leaking oil/gasoline into a creek running downstream. Upper Dublin has a historical commission and we are into historic preservation. I am a history teacher as well as being President of the Board of Commissioners and realize the value of historic structures. However, emergencies sometimes require emergency personnel to take actions we would prefer they not have to take.Jules Mermelsteinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04439065768389724277noreply@blogger.com
